Our Mission and Impact

The Business and Human Rights Roundtable aims to become the largest national gathering on business and human rights with participants from government, business, community groups and civil society, law firms, investor organizations, international bodies, national human rights institutions, trade unions, academia and the media. Participants can take part in numerous panel discussions on topics that relate to the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights – the United Nations “Protect, Respect and Remedy” Framework, as well as current business-related human rights issues. This Forum is a veritable opportunity to network, share experiences and learn about the latest initiatives to promote corporate respect for human rights. The Forum is open to all relevant stakeholder groups, governmental institutions, the wider public, intergovernmental and regional organizations, businesses, labor unions, human rights institutions, non-governmental organizations, and affected stakeholders, among others.

We actively monitor compliance with laws and report any infringements to appropriate authorities, fostering accountability.

Operational Framework

Methodology of Engagement

The National Business and Human Rights Roundtable (NBH2R) operates through a structured approach to ensure effective collaboration among its members. Meetings are convened quarterly, either in person or via videoconference, depending on member availability and location. These gatherings are held in major cities such as Abuja, Lagos, or Port Harcourt. In between meetings, members maintain regular communication through email to discuss ongoing projects and emerging issues. The secretariat, managed by Global Rights in partnership with the National Human Rights Commission, facilitates these operations by preparing agendas and distributing meeting summaries. Additionally, smaller working groups may be formed to tackle specific topics, leveraging the expertise of individual members.

Our communication strategy emphasizes transparency and inclusivity, ensuring that all members are informed and engaged in the decision-making process. This approach fosters a collaborative environment where diverse perspectives are valued and integrated into our initiatives.

Collaborative Practices

Governance Structure

The governance of the NBH2R is designed to uphold the principles of confidentiality and mutual respect. The standing group is chaired by the convening entities, and all meetings adhere to the Chatham House Rule. This ensures that information shared during discussions is protected, allowing for open and honest dialogue among members. Participants are encouraged to contribute evidence-based insights and solutions to guide government and business practices towards better human rights outcomes.

Rules of Engagement

Members are expected to collaborate constructively, respecting the diverse viewpoints within the group. This collaborative ethos is crucial for developing comprehensive strategies that address the complex challenges at the intersection of business and human rights. By working together, members aim to provide actionable advice that supports the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights in Nigeria.
